Hubie Halloween is a polarizing one. Some people love Adam Sandler's latest Netflix offering, calling it a return to his earlier, sillier form. And some people (like our own Allie Gemmill) call it "very, very bad," making us wish he'd return to his dramatic roles like Uncut Gems or Punch-Drunk Love. For the Sandman's next movie, he just might thread those two needles. Per Deadline, Sandler is making another film for Netflix as part of his ongoing deal, but with a twist: It will be a serious, science fiction, space-set drama directed by a helmer …
In preparation for our American, remotely-produced honoring of television, how about some British, remotely-produced honoring of television? The 2020 BAFTA TV Awards took place on July 31, honoring the best and brightest not just in UK-specific television (though there is plenty of that, with plenty of delightfully British-sounding names) but of international TV as well, with plenty of awards going to programs (sorry, "programmes") you've heard of and love. Chernobyl got lots of love, winning both best miniseries and best leading actor for Jared Harris. Fleabag won a comedy acting award, but not for Phoebe …
Fans of bleak metafiction rejoice! Johan Renck, the Emmy-winning director of the hit HBO series Chernobyl, is in talks to adapt the bizarre 1965 cult novel The Magus by John Fowles. The miniseries is being produced by Neal Street Productions, who handled production duties on Sam Mendes’ Oscar-winning film 1917. (Mendes is also one of the production house’s heads.) Renck himself revealed the news in an Instagram post, featuring the novel’s trippy-as-all-hell cover art along with the caption “Something is brewing.” https://www.instagram.com/p/CAswxROlJg-/ Pippa Harris of Neal Street confirmed …
If you're anything like me and the first thought outta your head after each Watchmen episode is a comically drawn-out "buh whaaaaa?" then we've got some good news. HBO has announced The Official Watchmen Podcast, a three-part after-the-episode conversation between series mastermind Damon Lindelof and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin. [caption id="attachment_840259" align="alignright" width="360"] Image via HBO[/caption] The podcast will launch on November 3 after the debut of episode 3, the incredibly-titled "She Was Killed By Space Junk", which is set to introduce Jean Smart as former Silk Spectre and …
With all the reboots and remakes on the way from the major studios, at least Pirates of the Caribbean’s ship has sailed, right? Wrong! Despite five installments of the franchise, and Johnny Depp’s fading star, Disney wants more, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Not with Depp, necessarily, but under the tutelage of writer Ted Elliot and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin. Elliot co-wrote the screenplays for the first four Pirates films. Mazin also has a writing credit on the new Charlie’s Angels, due for release next month. A sixth Pirates film, Disney hopes, will inject new life …
While the Primetime Emmy Awards won’t be held until next Sunday, the Emmys as a whole have so many awards to give out that they awarded a bevy of them during a two-day event this past weekend. Dubbed the “Creative Arts Emmys,” this ceremony focuses on guest acting and animation categories, and categories related to things like score, cinematography, production design, and main titles. So how did things go? Well, Game of Thrones is already off to a roaring start for its final season, winning 10 of the 18 Creative Arts Emmy awards it was nominated for. That …
Stranger Things' Upside Down could be connected to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in different ways. Let's take a look at the possibilities.
Chernobyl is a brilliant take on the disaster, but there are a few key details that the show changes.
Chernobyl isn't the only event from the Soviet union deserving of an HBO miniseries. Several other tragedies should also be adapted for television.
Capping off the 2019 Television Critics Association summer press tour was the 35th Annual TCA Awards, hosted by Desus & Mero hosts Desus Nice and The Kid Mero. With 12 categories and one Lifetime Achievement award to dole out, the full winners list indicates there was a big preference for a few big prestige dramas this year, including HBO's Chernobyl and Deadwood, as well as critically-acclaimed comedy Fleabag starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Fleabag was the big winner of the evening. The series nabbed wins in Outstanding Achievement in Comedy and Program of the Year. Fleabag lead Waller-Bridge …
HBO's Chernobyl was one of the year's biggest surprises so far in television. A 5-part miniseries depicting the most devastating nuclear disaster in history and its aftermath doesn't exactly sound like a recipe for success, especially considering it was scheduled to follow HBO's biggest and most successful show ever, the epic fantasy Game of Thrones.
Last September at the Toronto International Film Festival, the savvy indie distributor Neon picked up a little movie called Wild Rose, about a down-on-her-luck Scottish woman who yearns to make it big as a country singer in Nashville. I attended the festival, but amid a sea of high-profile awards hopefuls from major studios, the film wasn't on my radar. Not even close. When I finally caught up with Wild Rose seven months later at CinemaCon, I had low expectations, as I'm not a big fan of country music and hadn't heard of the …
Atomic energy is the single most destructive energy human beings have been able to control... barely. The problem is, we're also quite dependent on it for some of our energy needs. This can have disastrous results, and the Chernobyl power plant leak and fallout is a testament to that. Such human drama and strife even became worthy of a TV show, namely HBO's Chernobyl.
According to IMDB’s rating system, HBO and Sky UK’s Chernobyl is the highest-rated TV show of all time. While that might be arguable, there’s no denying that the five-part series has been a huge hit and is an incredibly-made piece of episodic storytelling.
