While researching urban legends, Chicago semiotics graduate student Helen Lyle learns of the Candyman, a spirit who, when a person says his name five times to a mirror, appears and kills the summoner by using a hook attached to the bloody stump of his right arm. She learns from two cleaning ladies that Ruthie Jean, a resident in the notorious Cabrini-Green housing project, is rumored to have been killed by the Candyman, and discovers there have been twenty-five similar murders. Skeptical, Helen and her friend, Bernadette Walsh, repeat the Candyman's name to Helen's bathroom mirror, but nothing happens.
