Katie is a kindhearted seventeen-year-old waitress who lives in a hamlet in rural Arizona with her mother Tracey. Katie begins a relationship with local mechanic and ex-convict Bruno. She turns to prostitution to overcome poverty, escape her boring life and fulfil her plan to move to San Francisco. Bruno finds out that she is having sex for money and tells her to stop doing so. She quits prostitution, but is raped by two of Bruno's co-workers. Bruno thinks that they paid her for sex, so he ends their relationship. Tracey leaves with a married man and Katie's money.
