The Ugly Stepsister

Elvira and Alma are sisters whose mother, Rebekka, has recently married an older man in hopes of obtaining wealth and privilege, becoming the stepmother of Agnes, the man's daughter from a previous marriage. However, Agnes' father dies on his wedding night and the family learns that he was actually penniless. Worried that she might be too old to find a new, wealthy husband, Rebekka decides that she will marry off one of her daughters instead. She selects Elvira as Alma has not yet reached puberty. While Elvira dreams of marrying the shallow Prince Julian, Rebekka is aware that her daughter is widely seen as conventionally ugly and has little chance of winning him over, particularly if Agnes were to also compete for his attention.
