Joseph Levitch (March 16, 1926 – August 20, 2017), better known by his stage name Jerry Lewis, was an American comedian, actor, singer, filmmaker and humanitarian. Dubbed "The King of Comedy" and "The Total Filmmaker" for eight decades, Lewis appeared in more than 60 film and television productions, performed his comedy routines at nightclubs and concerts and ventured into behind-the-scenes work, as a director, producer and screenwriter following a union between his company, Jerry Lewis Productions and Paramount Pictures. Lewis released several albums as a singer, selling millions of records and throughout his career, he sought to raise awareness for muscular dystrophy, serving as national chairman of the Muscular Dystrophy Association from 1956 until 2011.
